Clean windows make your home brighter and more welcoming. Follow our top tips to keep your windows and roof windows streak-free and gleaming and make your interiors shine all year round.

Key Takeaways
 1. How to clean windows from the inside

Start by dusting the inside of your windows with an anti-static cloth; apply warm water or a non-abrasive glass cleaner and wipe with a microfibre cloth, soft sponge or window squeegee.

 2. How to clean windows from the outside

For rotating windows: rotate the window 180° to clean the outer pane without having to go outside. For other models, consider using a telescopic window-cleaning tool to clean your windows from the ground.

 3. Regular maintenance extends the life of your windows

Clean windows, exterior hardware, seals, tracks and opening mechanisms monthly to ensure that they stay looking - and functioning - like new.

Why is it important to clean window glass?

Well-maintained windows improve the appearance of your home inside and out.

Dust and pollen can accumulate on your window frames and glass, which can impact the quality of your indoor air.

Washing windows regularly allows natural light to diffuse evenly and creates a warmer and healthier atmosphere in your home.

The best way to clean windows: three practical tips

Cleaning windows like a pro is simple with these three tips:

1. Choose the right time for window cleaning

If you want to know how to clean windows without streaks, start by cleaning them on cloudy days or when they’re not exposed to direct sunlight. Direct light can cause streaks because the water or glass cleaner dries too quickly on the glass.

2. Select cleaning tools based on the type of dirt

To remove dust, wipe the inside of your window frame and glass with an anti-static cloth.

To remove fingerprints or other stains when window cleaning, use a mild degreasing detergent and a microfibre or chamois cloth.

Finish by drying the corners and edges of your windows with a clean cloth.

3. No need to invest in expensive products

You don't need to use an expensive glass cleaner to clean your windows. Clean water and a microfibre cloth should give you a streak-free shine.

If you do use a glass cleaner, use one that doesn’t contain abrasive substances. Distilled white vinegar is an eco-friendly, versatile household staple and a very effective window dirt removal agent; the smell disappears when it’s exposed to fresh air.

If the window dirt is particularly stubborn, leave your solution to soak on the glass for a few minutes before going over it with a squeegee or sponge.

Follow these three tips and you won't leave streaks or scratches or damage the surfaces.

How to clean roof windows

Roof windows are great for bringing natural light into your home. Their position can make them difficult to clean, however, especially from the outside.

But thankfully, many roof windows are equipped with self-cleaning glass: a specific treatment on the outer surface that allows dirt to slide off, keeping the glass cleaner for longer, it even works on flat roof windows

Some VELUX roof windows also offer convenient features to make it easier to remove dirt.

Cleaning a centre-pivot roof window

Centre-pivoted roof windows pivot 180° around a central axis.

Rotate the roof window sash and lock it using the latch at the bottom of the frame. This allows you to clean its exterior without having to lean out of the window. Return it into its original position to clean its interior.

Centre-pivoted roof windows can be rotated 180° for easy cleaning.

Cleaning a top-hung roof window

VELUX Top-hung roof windows are designed to open from the bottom. However, they have a tilting function that allows them to be fully rotated inwards, which make it easier to clean them.

To engage the central pivots of a top-hung roof window, firstly open the handle at the bottom. Then reach up and open the vent var and gently pull down, using the vent bar.

This will engage the centre-pivot hinges allowing your roof window to open and tilt inwards. Secure the open roof window with the sliding bolts.

Simply close the roof window and vent bar fully, to reset the original position.

These VELUX roof windows offer a tilt function that allows them to be opened for more efficient cleaning.

Whichever type of window you have, start from the outside and work your way inside. This prevents the water used for cleaning from falling on surfaces that have just been cleaned. Start with the outer frame and glass, then finish with the inner frame and glass.

How cleaning your windows keeps them in good condition

Regular cleaning improves the appearance of windows and extends their lifespan.

Determine your cleaning routine

To keep your windows in perfect condition, adopt a routine that prevents excessive accumulation of dirt and dust — this is the best way to clean windows and maintain their clarity over time.

  1. Do a weekly light clean, wipe the window frames, glass and handles with an anti-static cloth.
  2. Next, using a soft sponge and soapy water or clean, warm water to remove the surface dust from the windows. Finally, use a microfibre cloth to remove any residue and get a streak free shine.
  3. If you prefer a natural solution, knowing how to clean windows with vinegar can be especially useful. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle, apply it to the glass, and wipe with a clean microfibre cloth. Vinegar helps dissolve grime, removes fingerprints, and leaves the glass clear without relying on chemical cleaners. This method is ideal for quick touch-ups between deeper cleans.
  4. Once a month, undertake a more thorough clean. Clean your windows panes, exterior fittings, seals, rails and opening mechanisms to ensure your windows operate properly.

To keep your windows clean and protect the glass from wear and scratches, avoid washing windows with all-purpose cleaners that contain harsh chemicals or using rough cloths and metal squeegees that can scratch the glass.

Keeping your roof windows in good condition is essential to ensure optimal brightness and extend their lifespan.
