If there is anyone who knows a thing or two about making a house full of heart and soul, it is paint and wallpaper experts Farrow & Ball. Our shared love of creating beautiful spaces that transform the look and feel of a home has led to the creation of a new film, which follows the story of a young couple from south west England who have recently brought their single-storey extension to life using VELUX roof windows and Farrow & Ball colours.

Today, we are looking around the extension of Sean and Sophie Toomey who recently welcomed their baby daughter, Murphy into the world. For the full tour, and to see the transformative effect extra daylight can have on interior design, see their film below.

Sean and Sophie bought their 1950s three-bedroom detached house in the sought after area of Swindon 10 months ago as they knew it had great renovation potential.

The rear of the property originally had four small rooms that were dark, gloomy and completely unusable but with the help of a local architect and builders, they took on their biggest renovation project to date.

By this time, Sophie, 35, was heavily pregnant with her daughter Murphy, now four months old. Sean, 31, who works for a grounds work and civil engineering company, said: “We realised that we could get so much more for our money if we took on a property that needed a lot of work and could be extended. When we came across our current house, we knew it had so much potential to become a really beautiful family home that we could design to suit how we live.”

They added a single-storey extension to create a large, open-plan kitchen and living room with three large VELUX INTEGRA® electric white painted roof windows to provide as much daylight and ventilation throughout the space as possible. To access the garden easily, they also added bi-fold doors.

Grant Sneddon, daylight expert at VELUX, said: “Making sure that light penetrates deep into the room is important when you have such a big space and roof windows do that as they offer twice as much daylight as a vertical window of the same size.”

“It’s great to have as much natural light as we can in this space,” said Sophie. The three VELUX windows have helped open up the whole extension with daylight from above that penetrates deep into the room, bouncing light across the space. It makes it a really nice airy space that we can enjoy as a family.”

Their new kitchen was ultra-modern with a stunning floor-to-ceiling assortment of black cabinets, a large black fridge with white walls and light grey tiles on their floor.

Overwhelmed with choice, many people simply play safe when decorating their homes, choosing to add colour through decorative items like a vase, cushion or throw.

But Sophie and Sean enlisted the help of Joa Studholme, a colour consultant at Farrow & Ball who knows a thing or two about what paint works where. Her mantra and advice to homeowners is to do things that you love. She said: “When we chose colours for Sean and Sophie’s extension, we did it to reflect their personalities, to suit not only the way they live but to make the most of the daylight from their new roof windows.”

The couple have a love for mid-century interiors, which is reflected in the colours chosen during their colour consultation with Farrow & Ball.

“The daylight in the extension changes throughout the day and because our paint is so heavily pigmented the colours change a lot in different light conditions, which makes them feel really alive, particularly when you’ve got fantastic natural light coming from roof windows,” said Joa.

She added: “We knew they really liked the mid-century modern feel, so we chose colours that worked really well with their furniture. Inky dark Inchrya Blue creates a fantastic moody atmosphere in their TV snug but we’ve gone with the much more neutral Bone at the back of the room to help reflect as much daylight back in to the space, and added a touch of India Yellow to make a feature of their quirky art work.”

Sophie said: “Without a Farrow & Ball colour consultation our extension would still have white walls, acting as a perfect example of how a tailored colour consultation really opened our minds and imagination to a range of new ideas. They have allowed us to see how colours can make parts of the room feel different, even within the same space.”

Grant Sneddon at VELUX added: “Sean and Sophie’s decision to install VELUX INTEGRA® electric roof windows and blinds means that they can take advantage of the VELUX ACTIVE Kit using a smart home sensor that automatically ventilates the home based on temperature, CO2 levels and humidity so it is constantly regulating the indoor environment to let air in and out.”

The system is easy to install and comes with its own app to let homeowners control their windows from anywhere in the world by simply pressing a button on your phone. It’s even compatible with both the Apple® HomeKit™ and Siri®, Apple’s voice-controlled intelligent assistant meaning windows can be operated using only your voice.

Sean said: “The extension has really transformed how we all spend time together. We love taking turns to cook while the other person relaxes and watches TV or plays with Murphy.

“The roof windows with added rain sensors add so much daylight and air flow throughout the day, they’re a great way of bringing the outside in. Living in the UK, the weather can change in an instant so we feel reassured that they will close automatically if the rain comes on when we’re out.

“We also chose VELUX dark blue electric roller blinds to tie in with the interiors of the kitchen, and awning blinds to help control heat coming in, particularly on bright days.”

“I can speak for us both that we’re now going to spend a lot of time in this room from now on,” Sophie added. “We have our kitchen area where we can cook and our lovely snug living area to relax and unwind. It’s a great space to be able to entertain with friends and play with our daughter.”
