Wish that spare room wasn’t so dark? A roof window could be the answer
It’s incredible what a bit of daylight can do. One roof window, and suddenly the loft you only use for storage feels like a room you actually want to spend time in.
Whether you're converting an attic bedroom, adding a cosy reading nook, or just tired of keeping the lights on during the day, roof windows can make a real difference. They bring in natural light from above – the kind that makes rooms feel bigger, fresher and more comfortable to be in.
At VELUX, we design our roof windows to be smart, simple, and built to last. They don’t just look good – they help you make better use of your home, all year round. And because they let in fresh air too, stuffy upstairs rooms become a thing of the past.
Not sure where to start? Think about the angle and pitch of your roof, the level of insulation you need, and the finish you’d like. The right choice can completely change how your home feels, often more than you’d expect.

How are VELUX roof windows operated?
VELUX roof windows are designed to bring in fresh air and daylight, with a choice of operation types to suit different homes and lifestyles.
Choose from three main options:
- Manual (hand-operated): Manual roof windows are easy to open by hand, making them ideal for loft conversions, where the window is within easy reach. Enjoy natural ventilation whenever you need it.
- Electric (wall switch): Electric roof windows offer added comfort and convenience at the touch of a button. Powered by mains electricity and operated via a wall switch, they’re ideal for everyday ease, whether you're airing out the room or adjusting ventilation while relaxing on the sofa. A built-in rain sensor ensures the window closes automatically when it rains, giving you peace of mind whatever the weather.
- Solar-powered (wall switch): All the benefits of electric operation, but powered by solar energy. Easy to install with no wiring needed, these windows are operated by remote control and help reduce your carbon footprint while keeping your home bright and comfortable. Solar-powered windows can open and close more than 100 times when the battery is fully charged, and the solar cell remains effective even in cloudy weather.
