LIGHT AND AIR THROUGH LIGHT SHAFT AND ROOF WINDOW

An obvious choice for letting the sky into your home is to construct a light shaft up through the ceiling to the roof - and install a VELUX roof window in the opening.

The pitch of the shaft's surfaces determines the diffusion of the light in the room. So start by deciding where and how you want the light to fall. And when it comes to the actual construction of the light shaft, it is worth remembering to use light colours so that the light is not absorbed by the colours.

The following is a brief checklist of some of the practical considerations you need to bear in mind when fitting roof windows:

REMEMBER
  • Roof windows using light shafts can be built into houses with horizontal plaster or wooden ceilings.
  • Start by deciding how you want the light to be diffused in the room – this will determine the shape of the light shaft.
  • Also remember to look at the house from the outside before deciding on the positioning of the windows.
  • Choose a window size that fits in with the rafter modules.
  • Only pivot windows should be used.
  • Discuss electrical operation before installing the roof window. Bundled conductor cable should, in any case, be installed from the outset. Electrically-operated roof windows, blinds and awnings are recommended for windows that are inaccessible.
  • Opt for maintenance-free polyurethane windows for the more inaccessible location.
  • Choose light colours for the opening itself. Colours can absorb up to 10% of the light.
